Bishop Joe Vásquez of the Diocese of Austin expressed concern and disappointment over the action taken by the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees to adopt a revised and controversial curricula on human sexuality. Bishop Vásquez submitted written comments to the board prior to the vote asking the board to reject the curricula. Bishop Vásquez intends to send a letter to the faithful asking parents and guardians to exercise their right under the law to opt out of the program. For the sake of the intellectual and emotional well-being of their children, he will encourage families to seek age-appropriate education that properly reflects the dignity of the human person and the natural truth and beauty of human sexuality.
