Young Catholics are both the present and the future of the Church. They are a sign that the Mystical Body of Christ is alive and will remain so for generations to come. As our children and young people return to school, we pause to reflect on the tragedies that have shattered the hopes of families in Uvalde, Texas and so many other parts of our nation. I ask that, together, we continue to pray for these communities whose hearts are broken by losses that will remain with them forever. Let us keep the memory of the young students whose lives have been lost as we begin the new school year.
From the first day of kindergarten to moving into college dorms, the journey of education allows young people to further learn about themselves, their relationship with our Lord, and their important role in society. It is a journey in which we work to ensure that our youth know and live Christ’s love during this time of human and intellectual formation.
Our call is to accompany them by modeling our own relationship with Christ; by living out our baptismal call to see the world through the lens of the Gospel of Life. We must always assure them of their integral role in our Catholic family, especially this Local Church.
We must also learn from our young people by seeing the world through their eyes and by experiencing our faith with their enthusiasm. We are inspired by their fervor in Eucharistic Adoration. Though they are engaged in technology and social media, they yearn for moments of respite by spending time with our Lord in silence and prayer. As we continue our journey through our Eucharistic Revival, let us be grateful for the gift the young people are to the Church.
