Tomorrow, we celebrate the annual “Saints and Scholars” gala, where individuals who have made significant contributions to each of our 20 outstanding Catholic schools will be honored. The gala raises funds for tuition assistance and celebrates the gift of Catholic education. Catholic schools form the whole person, in the likeness and image of God, through wisdom and holiness. In this important ministry, our students receive excellent academic instruction, but also form Christian virtues which help them to become servant leaders. This month, Pope Francis’ intentions are for our educators. He asks us to, “…pray that educators may be credible witnesses, teaching fraternity rather than competition and helping the youngest and most vulnerable above all.”
Join me in thanking all administrators, teachers and staff for making our Catholic schools places where young people are formed, loved and respected.
In gratitude... During these last few weeks, I had the opportunity to lead 90 pilgrims to Rome. I prayed for each of you, the faithful of the Diocese of Austin, during each Mass celebrated in holy places where saints down through the centuries lived out their faith, in stately basilicas and great cathedrals. Still in Rome, hearing of the passing of Pope Benedict XVI, I had the honor of attending his Funeral Mass, which was quite special to me as it was Pope Benedict XVI who appointed me Bishop of Austin. Just days later, I also heard of the passing of my father, Juan Vásquez. Know of my profound gratitude for the many kind messages offering condolences to me and my family during this time. May God bless you.
