Anniversary of the Dobbs Decision

Brothers and Sisters,

Two years ago today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in all 50 states. The Dobbs ruling was a landmark decision providing legal protection for the preborn.  We are grateful for those who have worked tirelessly for nearly 50 years advocating for the most vulnerable of our society. Sadly, abortions continue in our country and sometimes up until birth.  For this reason, it is imperative for us to remain steadfast in prayer and continue to advocate for the protection of babies in their mother’s womb.

The Dobbs decision was a judicial victory, but our efforts extend beyond the legal battles. Our culture remains deeply divided on this issue; may we always strive to build a culture of life where we embrace and support mothers and cherish families. We ask that God transform the hearts and minds of our society toward the Gospel of Life.

The Diocese of Austin serves expectant mothers who face unplanned pregnancies through many programs and services, including Catholic Charities, Annunciation Maternity Home, Our Lady of the Angels Maternity Shelter, and the JPII Life Center. These organizations provide essential resources including housing, medical care, counseling, and more.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, reminds us that we are to meet people in whatever circumstances life has given them and to walk with them in compas­sion and love. Our response to this call is an initiative of the Catholic Church in the United States, Walking with Moms in Need, which strives to ensure that every parish becomes a source of assistance and comfort to women offering them authentic Christian friendship and the resources they need to choose life. As Catholics, it is our responsibility and privilege to uphold the dignity and sanctity of every human life. Let us pray for the courage and wisdom to protect and defend life from conception to natural death. Together, let us be the voice that stands for life, demonstrating our love and reverence for every child.
