Black Ministry Objectives and Priorities

On Saturday within the Octave of Easter 2018, Black Catholics throughout the Diocese of Austin gathered together to pray and reflect on the pastoral priorities and objectives of the black apostolate. Focused on “The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me: Act justly, love goodness, and walk humbly with your God,” Msgr. Edward B. Branch of Atlanta facilitated discussions about social issues, human dignity, marriage and family life, youth and young adults, and opportunities for spiritual growth.

Using the National Black Catholic Congress Pastoral Plan of Action and Encounter that Leads to Transformation to guide the apostolate’s unique pastoral planning, Msgr. Branch designated ten groups to discuss and make recommendations as to what are the most pertinent objectives and action items for the black apostolate of the diocese, which are listed below:

• Spirituality and the Saints
• Leadership in the Church
• Addressing Social Justice Issues
• Catechesis and Evangelization
• Support Catholic Schools
• Vocations
• Youth Ministry
• Provide Spiritual Formation That Leads To Encounter
• Develop a Culture of Ministry that Creates Missionary Disciples
• Strengthen Christian Witness and Outreach

The fruit of this work has become for our diocese, Pastoral Objectives for the Black Apostolate: Authentically Black and Truly Catholic. This document reminds us that in the work of evangelization, “there is no vacation from our vocation!” It is our prayerful hope that this document will aid the work of evangelization, formation and spiritual growth.
