Associate Music Director
The celebration of the Eucharist at Mass is a living and dynamic sacred celebration - the source and summit of the Catholic life. At St. Catherine, the celebration incorporates a diverse musical offering. The Associate Music Director will lead the congregation, with and through the music ministry members, in singing music that serves, supports and amplifies the ritual and prayer of the Mass, subject to the sacramental and scriptural elements that it embodies as well as the relevant prayerful concerns of the community.
Choose and schedule music for weekly Catholic Mass, including hymns and sacred songs, psalms, acclamations and other congregational singing, as appropriate for the particular liturgy or season.
Prepare selected materials for use by assigned ensemble, including volunteer vocalists and instrumentalists of varying skills, using available parish materials, choral settings and octavos, etc.
Direct rehearsals for assigned ensemble to facilitate ongoing successful preparation of scheduled music as well as the care and enrichment of the members’ abilities and capacities.
Direct music at one or more weekly Sunday or Saturday Vigil liturgies, integrating prepared music with movement and flow of other liturgical components.
Provide musical accompaniment for ensemble where required or at professional discretion.
Fulfill the above duties in like fashion for seasonal liturgies such as Christmas, the Triduum and Easter.
Participate with the assigned ensemble in the life of the parish and community by being present and/or offering music at seasonal events.
Ensure compliance of the assigned ensemble and its members with all parish and diocesan policies and procedures; including those concerning Ethics In Ministry, the safeguarding of individuals, and the scheduling and care of parish facilities and assets.
Engage in effective collaboration with the Pastor and Clergy, with the Director of Liturgy & Music and with other parish staff and ministries.
Applicants with native knowledge and fluency in Catholic liturgy and musical traditions will be given primary consideration. Knowledge of the broader scope of Christian music will be helpful.
The ability to accompany an ensemble is preferred. Applicants with exceptional keyboard skills will be given enhanced consideration, as will those with formal conducting and/or arranging experience.
The best-qualified individual will be able to: observe and absorb the existing ensemble’s methods and repertoire; accurately assess the needs of the worshiping community; and lead the ministry, its members and the assembly toward deeper worship.
