Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday, Jan. 19, is the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Diocesan offices will be closed. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The Office of Black Catholics is hosting the seventh annual “Blood of the Martyrs” blood drive on Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Blood and Tissue Center van will be parked on Chalmers Street between Eighth and 11th streets on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University. Donors must be at least 17, have a picture ID and a Social Security number. To register in advance, or for more information, contact Johnnie Dorsey at (512) 217-9616 or e-mail him at the address below.

Postcard Campaign on FOCA

The Diocese of Austin will be participating in a national postcard campaign the weekend of Jan. 24-25 to make known our opposition to the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). FOCA goes far beyond the Roe v. Wade decision to make abortion an entitlement that the government must fund and promote. This bill would override state regulation of abortion, remove a parent’s right to be involved in their minor daughter’s abortion decision and require states to allow partial-birth abortion and other late-term abortions. Please take the time to educate yourself further on this legislation by visiting the link provided below. The letters provided, both in English and Spanish, are designed to be read at Masses or provided in the bulletin the weekend of Jan. 24-25.

Daily e-mail from the Pastoral Center

On weekdays, a short piece of Scripture, prayer or an uplifting quote is e-mailed to all diocesan staff. “God’s Word for the Catholic Church of Central Texas” is now open to anyone who wishes to subscribe. To subscribe, visit the diocesan home page linked below and look on the right-hand side of the page for "God’s Word for the Catholic Church of Central Texas." Enter your e-mail address and click on "Sign up!"

Year of St. Paul Mass and Pro-Life Mass

The annual Pro-Life Mass on Jan. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at San José Parish in Austin will include a special message in honor of St. Paul as we celebrate the Pauline Year designated by Pope Benedict XVI.

I join the Office of Pro-Life Activities in inviting all Catholics of the diocese to prayerfully unite on behalf of greater respect for all human life at the annual Diocesan Pro-Life Mass scheduled for Jan. 24 at San José Parish in Austin. This Mass will also be a diocesan Mass in honor of St. Paul. A schedule of events follows:

• Prayer Vigil: Participants will gather at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of San José and caravan to Planned Parenthood of South Austin where the rosary will be prayed. The caravan will then return to San José.
• Rosary and Mass for Life: A Rosary for Life will begin at 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. All priests of the diocese are invited to concelebrate. A meal (for a nominal fee) will be served in the parish hall following the Mass. I have the honor to preside at this Mass.
• March and Rally for Life: The Texas Alliance for Life will host the annual march and rally at the Capitol following Mass. The march up Congress begins at 1:30 p.m. at Fourth and Guadalupe streets followed by the Rally for Life on the south steps of the Capitol from 2 to 3 p.m.
• Party for Life: Immediately after the rally, Catholics of all ages are invited to a Party for Life at the UT Catholic Center on 2010 University Ave. The Catholic Longhorns for Life and the Office of Pro-Life Activities invite all to tour the UT Catholic Center, to meet our diocesan seminarians and enjoy refreshments, fun and fellowship from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Please RSVP for this event by calling (512) 949-2487.

For more information about any of these events, call the Office of Pro-Life Activities at (512) 949-2487 or e-mail Marie Seale at the address below.
