Qualities to look for in candidates for religious life

According to the National Religious Vocations Conference, the following are qualities to look for in candidates for religious life:

  • Membership in the Catholic Church
  • Generally good health
  • Adequate intellectual ability
  • Healthy relationships, including good friends
  • Sense of humor
  • Ability to make a positive choice for celibacy
  • Faith and sense of integrity
  • Relationship with God
  • Responsiveness to others
  • Capacity to serve a variety of people
  • Leadership ability
  • Collaborative working style
  • Ability to live simply, share a common life, and compromise for the common good

Where to look for potential candidates

Future priests, brothers and sisters can be found everywhere. But most often they might be:

  • Teaching in a religious education program or in a Catholic school
  • Lectoring at Mass
  • Singing in the choir
  • Serving as a Eucharistic Minister
  • Volunteering in church or civic projects
  • Participating in parish study groups or Newman programs in college
  • Attending Mass regularly
  • Participating in a scouting program

How to Invite

  • Ask if he or she has ever thought about priesthood or religious life.
  • Invite him or her to consider religious life.
  • Tell him or her why you think he or she would make a good priest, brother or nun. Give examples of what you see in him or her.
  • Introduce him or her to the vocation director.
  • Pray for him or her.
