A message from Bishop Vásquez

Confirmation Scheduling for 2014

More than 60 parishes have responded to my communication of June 26 regarding scheduling a Confirmation date for 2014. If you plan to have Confirmation in 2014 and have not submitted a request, please do so as soon as possible. Please note that the remaining dates available on my schedule for 2014 are indicated with the word “available.” The deadline to submit a request is Aug. 15 so that we can mail a final schedule to the parishes by the end of August. Thank you for your cooperation.

Year of Faith

Many people and families are planning one last opportunity for a summer vacation before school begins again in August. There are also just over four months left in the Church’s observance of the Year of Faith and now is the time to plan for what the parish can do in these last months. Pope Francis continues to highlight the link between professing our faith and living our faith and how we evangelize others through our actions. In these last months for the Year of Faith, look again to the US bishops’ website to offer formation opportunities for adult Catholics to learn more about how they can witness their faith to others. Written in 1992, Go and Make Disciples is still the basic document for evangelization efforts in our country and continues to offer inspiration and guidance. Available in Spanish and English, the document provides goals and strategies to “Come and follow! Come, hear the Lord calling each one of us; come, follow the Teacher who makes us his disciples. Come, be part of the story of salvation.”

Prayers requested

Please pray for all of the young people from our diocese who are traveling to Rio de Janerio for World Youth Day, July 23-28.

Reflection question

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following question for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 28):

  • In today’s Gospel, we hear Luke’s form of the Lord’s Prayer. Luke’s Gospel continues with two simple parables that illustrate the meaning of prayer. God is always there ready to help us as any loving father would care for his child. Every day God continually watches over us with love and protection. In what ways do you have faith in God’s loving presence? How do you persevere in prayer, trusting that God answers in ways that are best for us?
