A message from Bishop Vásquez

Abortion legislation

Thanks to those who participated in the rallies and gave testimony at the Capitol in support of SB 1 and HB 2, which would put certain limits on abortions in Texas. I am grateful for your defense of the pro-life cause and your participation in the legislative process.

Year of Faith

Last September, Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay, Wis., chair of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, offered “10 Ways Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith.” With four months remaining for the celebration of the Year of Faith, it is a good time to reflect on how well we are doing to improve the way we live and witness our Catholic faith. A number of the suggestions are “already requirements for Catholics; others can be embraced by Catholics at all times and especially during the Year of Faith:” Bishop Ricken’s list is also available in Spanish.

Prayers requested

Please pray for all of the young people from our diocese who are traveling to Rio de Janerio for World Youth Day, July 23-28.

Reflection question

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following question for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 21):

  • Jesus is visiting his friends Martha and Mary. While Mary sits at his feet listening to him, Martha busies herself “with much serving” and resents her sister for not helping. Jesus’ challenge to Martha is really asking her to examine her priorities. Service is important, but service begins with listening to the Master. How do you need to reorder your priorities to have time to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to him? In what ways have you become burdened “with much serving?”
