The Friday E-Pistle (May 10, 2013)
A message from Bishop Vásquez
Diocesan offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. On this Memorial Day let us pray for our veterans and men and women currently serving in our military for their dedicated service. We especially pray for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in defense of our nation.
Memorial Day Prayer
The following prayer, from Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers, can be used for private prayer on Memorial Day:
God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely
into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Please consider using the following question for the feast of Pentecost (May 19):
- In today’s Gospel the disciples are gathered behind closed doors “for fear of the Jews.” Jesus comes into their presence and gifts them with peace and calls them to go and share this peace with others. He breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” In what ways have you received Jesus’ message of peace? How do the gifts of the Holy Spirit help you to be a more faithful Catholic?

- God: Open our hearts and minds to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.
