Tragedy in West

By now you have all heard of the explosion at the fertilizer plant in West. Many people have been injured and some have died, and many have lost their homes and belongings.

We have received a compassionate message of condolence and blessing from our Holy Father, Pope Francis, as well as messages from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey, Bishop of Corpus Christi who also expressed their prayerful support. We have also received many other expressions of support and prayer from other bishops. I am asking that we continue to remember in prayer, especially at Mass, those who have been harmed by this tragic event, and to support them as they strive to rebuild their lives.

I want to thank Father Ed Karasek and Father Boniface Onjefu of St. Mary, Church of the Assumption for their prompt pastoral response to assist those who are suffering as a result of this tragedy. The parish has opened its facilities to allow first responders to conduct operations to assist those affected.

The Diocese of Austin, working with Catholic Charities of Central Texas and The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, has created a plan to respond to the various needs of the community. While the assessment of needs will continue in the days and weeks ahead, we know that in addition to our spiritual and material assistance there will be a need for ongoing support.

I am asking all of our parishes to take up a special collection to provide disaster relief this weekend, April 19-20, or on another date that pastors determine most appropriate. Funds from this collection should be sent to the Finance Office of the Diocese of Austin, payable to “CCCTX Disaster Relief Fund.”

For more information about the diocesan response to the tragedy in West, read the press release issued on Thursday.

Year of Faith

When the Year of Faith was proclaimed by Benedict XVI, dioceses around the globe determined various ways to implement the Year of Faith, from liturgical events, to publishing booklets, to hosting guest speakers. In our own country, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is offering the Ignite Your Catholic Faith video series. In the videos, archdiocesan Auxiliary Bishop Don Hying discusses the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A new video is uploaded every Friday having begun in October 2012 and now continuing through November 2013. The archdiocesan website has previous videos in the series available in an archived section of the website. The topics include: What is Faith? Why Do I Need the Church? What Do Catholics Say About Jesus and the Jews? There are more than 25 videos so far. Each video is less than 3 minutes long and can be used as discussion starters for parish meetings or adult formation sessions. They are well done, engaging videos with graphics and pictures to accompany each topic.

Lumen Gentium Awards 2013

The 2013 Lumen Gentium Awards will be June 25 at the Mayborn Civic Center in Temple. Nominations from pastors are due April 26. During this Year of Faith, pastors should consider nominating those in their parish who “evangelize.” Pastors should also note that after 2013, future Lumen Gentium ceremonies will only be held in odd-numbered years (i.e., 2015, 2017, etc…). To submit a nominee, pastors should use the Lumen Gentium Nomination Packet.

Reflection question

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following question for the Fifth Sunday of Easter (April 28):

  • Jesus sums up the entire law by challenging his disciples to “love one another.” He reminds them that he has already demonstrated how they are to love one another as he has loved them. How have you experienced the love of Christ in your own life? How would others know you are a follower of Jesus Christ?
